work makes my head hurt

January 29, 2008

i have had a non-stop headache for seven straight days. last night patti told me that my neck was so tight it was like i drank cement. this morning liz told me that i fell asleep first last night. these are all strange things, i think that my job has put me all out of whack. might be the stress (maybe??, ya’ think?).

yesterday a patient tried to bully me into waiving a records transfer fee. we charge 45 cents a page, by law we can charge 65 cents, we only need to cover our labor and supply costs, i’m not out to break the bank, this is by no means lucrative. this woman would not let up, and the more she hassled me the more effort i had to put into be calm and polite . . . i could feel a vessel burst in my forehead when she said that she was going to call her layer. this woman is going to pay more money retaining a layer to tell her that we are legally able to charge, than she would just spend just paying for the records. i was so not going to let up on this one, it would be unfair to all the people who pay without so much as drawing a breath.

it’s not just this that has gotten to me, obviously . . . i would tell more but that would be a hipaa violation. (and my head hurts.)

god, the customer service part of any job can be the toughest – so many people assume that you’re trying to fleece them.

when i feel like that, i take a “mental health” day and call in sick. then i pretend like i’m sick all day, which involves drinking a lot of sprite and watching gone with the wind.
